The terms sound design and sound designer already existed in the theater and were introduced to the cinema when Francis Ford Coppola asked Charlie Richmond, resident sound designer at the American Conservatory Theater (ACT) in San Francisco to re-edit the tapes of The Godfather. The appellation is not controlled by any organization. In film production, the sound designer is a member of the film crew, responsible for the original look of the soundtrack. The first show to fully utilize the MSC specification was the Magic Kingdom Parade at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in September 1991. These features have been incorporated into MIDI Show Control - an open communications protocol used to interact with various devices. Walt Disney uses systems of this type to control the image and sound in its theme parks (Disneyland). Broadway follows four years later by giving the title of sound designer to Jack Mann for his work on Show Girl.ĭuring the 1980s and 1990s, MIDI and digital technologies contributed to the rapid evolution of sound design. In 1959 the term "sound designer" attributed to David Collison appeared for the first time, alongside the light manager and the scenographer, on the poster and in the program of the Lyric Theater in London. Until then, there was no sound designer for the creations, the broadcasting of the recordings being entrusted to the stage manager assisted by an electrician. It was around the 1950s, when some Hollywood directors began directing Broadway productions, that sound design began to take on real importance. In 1927, a piece on Rasputin by Alexis Tolstoï and directed by Erwin Piscator was playing a recording of Lenin's voice. In 1906, Beerbohm Tree used recorded sounds in his production of Nero, tragedy by Stephen Phillip: it is about a sound of bugle, grunts and cries of pain, recorded for the occasion and reproduced by a gramophone during the play. Perhaps the earliest use of a theater-recorded sound is that of a crying baby, played on a phonograph, in a London theater in 1890. His manifesto "The Art of Noises" theorizes in particular the use of sound-noise, and remains the first document written on the use of abstract sounds in theater. The futurist Italian composer Luigi Russolo manufactures sound machines called intonarumori ("noise player") for his futuristic musical and theatrical representations from 1913. These effects were integrated into the script in order to be played at the appropriate times. Later, in the Elizabethan theater, the troupes used sound effects that came from outside the stage, such as bells, whistles, brass. Music and sound effects were used there to enhance the show. Much of what constitutes modern theater today comes from the commedia dell'arte. A sound designer is a person who practices the art of sound design.
